THE STARK BEAUTY OF DISASTER
Oil on unstretched canvas. This piece has multiple layers of canvas, cut and glued together, then glued to a back board. The painting was inspired by a Winter road trip through an area of national forest, which had been destroyed by Summer fires, burning millions of trees and fauna. The white snow packed hills in such contrast with the charred black trees was stunning. I knew the very moment I saw this scenery, I'd have to try to capture it on canvas...and so, I did! The technique of cutting the canvas into four different shapes representing the sky and the rolling hills, painting them, then gluing them together gives this piece depth and dimension.
